Unlike most other EVSE our ÖberCharger is using a hardware breaker for ground fault current interruption. This is much safer than letting the micro controller just turn off the power relay. If for any reason the GFCI trips, it can be reset through the round lid on the cover without opening the box. The red led next to the opening is only on when the car is charging.
Please don't open the box if you don't have to. Some customers have asked how to re-route the orange cable through a wall. For this, disconnect the box from the power source, open the lid by loosening the six screws along the edges and flip the cover to the left. Then disconnect the ends of the orange cable from the terminal block in the lower right corner. Open the grey tension nut outside the box and pull the cable out.
In case you wonder: The high power relay and the GFCI handle up to 40A but the micro controller in the top right corner signals max. 30A availability to your EV.
When your dryer outlet is in the garage, or in a laundry room with an open door to the garage, just plug-in your ¨Öber and start charging your car. Several customers, however, have inquired about an option to mount the box in the laundry room and route the charging cable through a hole in the wall to reach the car. Obviously the J1772 connector requires a very big hole to pass through. We are working on a solution for this situation. But until then we can provide DIY instructions that require only a half-inch hole and a little time to perform. This requires opening the box, disconnecting the orange charging cable from an easy-access terminal block, and reconnecting it after drilling a hole in the wall and feeding the cable through.
The founders of Öber-EV have spent a lifetime developing and employing new technologies for the High-Tech industries. Using Electric Vehicles since 2011, they found that there is a need for inexpensive charging stations at home or work that are easy to install and use.
